SACSS Celebrates Second Graduating Class in Workforce Development Program

On August 22, SACSS celebrated the second cohort of graduates this year in the Workforce Development program, which includes English, sewing, and computer classes, providing essential skills for employment and personal development.

We were honored to have special guests Tandeep Sawhney from Senator Charles Schumer’s office and Kathirvel Kumararaja, president of Tamil Sangam NY, to felicitate the graduates, who each received a certificate.

“This is what Queens is made out of, and New York is made out of; it is the immigrant dream. I think it is important to know that every one of you adds so much to our community, society, and everyday life,” Tandeep said. “If it were not for you bringing your culture and everything you know back to our country, we wouldn’t be as great as we are—especially New York, the country’s melting pot. I cannot wait to see what you do with these skills.”

Thirty-two students graduated from the SACSS Workforce Development program: eight in English Beginners, five in English Intermediate, six in computer training, and 10 in Stitch with SACSS. Upon completing the sewing class, each student received a free sewing machine to start their own at-home business and earn an income.

The success of these graduates is a testament to the impact of community-based programs in empowering individuals and promoting social and economic mobility. Congratulations to all the graduates!
