Queens Borough President Honors SACSS Health Director Rehan Mehmood for Outstanding Community Service

On Monday night, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards honored SACSS Director of Health Services Rehan Mehmood for his impactful work in the community during the 77th Pakistan Independence Day event at Queens Borough Hall.

The event was a celebration of Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage, and it also served as a platform to honor six local community leaders, including Rehan, for their invaluable efforts within the Queens community.

“It was during the pandemic that this community continued to stand up and make sure that everyone, no matter where they are from, could have the basics,” Richards said. Thank you for stepping up for our county. Congratulations to all the honorees, and may we continue to thrive and fight for the future that we want for our children.”

As Rehan took the stage to accept the award from the borough president, he highlighted the poignant stories of SACSS clients and the hardships – isolation, loneliness, food insecurity, and healthcare access – faced by newly arrived immigrants.

“Think about a mother carrying her five-week-old baby standing in line with around 1,000 individuals waiting for a bag of groceries, and at the same time, she’s hesitant in asking if she’s eligible for any benefits,” Rehan said in his speech. “Think about a senior walking on the streets of New York having suicidal thoughts. They’re sick and tired of loneliness, isolation, and navigating the complex healthcare system.”

Rehan added, “This is what we do, day in and day out, at SACSS. Last year alone, we assisted 220,000 individuals and families, ensuring their needs were met. From newborns to seniors, we take care of everyone.”

Rehan’s words resonated deeply with the audience, fostering empathy and understanding of the immigrant community’s challenges.
