Hasan Belgaumi Volunteers at SACSS Assisting English Language Students

Hasan Belgaumi, 16, from Singapore, who teaches English to Cambodian children through a program at his school, dedicated his summer to volunteering twice a week at SACSS, assisting students in our English Language classes.

“The English classes at SACSS are very beneficial. I was surprised to learn that many come in with no English experience and come out of the class having learned so much,” said Hasan, who was moved by the students’ determination to learn the language. “It’s nice to see the diversity of the community here that’s representative of the classes.”

During his time at SACSS, Hasan felt privileged to interact with people from all walks of life as he immersed himself in the community.

“I now have a better understanding of New York, English grammar, and the struggles people go through to learn English,” Hasan said. “It was nice to feel that I helped out somehow.”

Reflecting on his experience, Hasan says that volunteering shouldn’t be seen as an obligation but as an opportunity to use one’s skills and passions to serve the community. He is also working on writing a book about the South Asian community in New York.

As his time at SACSS comes to an end and he returns to Singapore to begin his senior year, we wish Hasan all the best in his future endeavors! We thank him for his dedication to helping our community members thrive.
