In 1987, Shamim Syed moved from India and found her place in a vibrant community in the heart of Flushing, Queens. She devoted her life to teaching special education within the New York City Public School system.
Now retired, Shamim spends her time at SACSS, a place that has become a hub for her to learn, socialize, and forge friendships with other women. She cherishes the atmosphere, especially the Wednesdays for Women program, which was established exclusively for women, where laughter, support, and camaraderie flow freely.
“I’ve met women of all backgrounds – Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani – but we see each other as one group,” Shamim said. “I’ve even brought my friends here, and they had a good time.”
Every Wednesday at SACSS, Shamim enjoys participating in activities like chair yoga, book of the month discussions, and arts and crafts. Having learned how to prioritize her health and well-being, Shamim said taking a walk or chatting with her neighbors brings her solace.
“I’m very friendly, so if I’m feeling down, I come outside and talk to my neighbor. I’m socially aware of what is happening in the world and always strive to be a better version of myself,” Shamim said.
For Shamim and her friends, the Wednesdays for Women program provides a safe, nurturing space filled with shared stories, laughter, and supporting each other on life’s journey.
